Dolls Don't Cry

2017 / Canada / 0:20:00

Trailer

A man and a woman are involved in the production of an animated film. He animates by night, she makes and repairs the accessories during the day. Behind the scene, a woman is waiting for her entrance.

  • Director : Frédérick Tremblay

Frédérick Tremblay directs short animated puppet films using a unique handkraft technique and improvising the stories directly in front of the camera. Le Tiroir et le corbeau and Blanche fraise are some of his recent works.

Point

A skillfully manufactured, quiet but powerful meta fiim, a true independent production, which shows us the everyday struggle of the lonesome animator with his creation. The film takes us deeper and deeper into a monotone world, which captivates the viewer from the first to the last frame.

Self-Honest Me

2017 / Japan / 0:04:56

One day the protagonist watches a movie with friends. She finds the film to be boring and reveals her discontent, but somehow nobody agrees with her.

  • Director : Kazuki Sekiguchi

Born in Tokyo, Japan in 1991. Graduated from Tama Art University in 2016. As of 2017, studying at the Department of Animation at Tokyo University of the Arts Graduate School of Film and New Media.

Point

Many people suffered from the peer pressure. Regardless of age and young man, they feel the sin to say something different from the others. This film deals with this topic in a straight forwarded way. A “pretty” character design makes them anonymous and ironically tells a “disease” that infects people living in this era. This is not a drama with a social topic. This is a cry from a heart. The anger explodes and burns the soul. Then the Infinite loneliness. Even if the road is not visible, one should head to somewhere. This film is a struggle itself.

After obtaining a DNAP (Diplôme national d’arts plastiques – the equivalent of a Bachelor’s degree) at l’Ecole supérieure d’art et de céramique of Tarbes, Boris Labbé continued his studies at l’EMCA of Angoulême (Ecole des métiers du cinéma d’animation). At l’EMCA, he produced Kyrielle for his final film project, which was in 2012 awarded the Special Jury’s prize for Graduation Films at the Festival international du film d’animation in Annecy. Simultaneously, he developed an artistic work that is both visual and plastic. He spent a year at Casa de Velázquez in Madrid. His latest short film Rhizome (2015), produced by Sacrebleu Productions, has been awarded by the Grand Prize at Japan Media Arts Festival in Tokyo and the Goden Nica Animation at Festival Ars Electronica in Linz.

Point

First of all, I must say this film inspired and even beaten me as an artist before being a member of the jury. It departs from the point where the so-called narrative is eliminated but makes us glimpses the possibility of what can be called "plastic drama", in a highly pure way. This approach to weld micro and macro together reminded me of "Structural Film" of the 1980s but in this work, this rigid structure itself bear rich "poetry", which is very contemporary. This film is “animation” in In the etymological spirit: "breath of life”.

The Pear

2016 / China / 0:06:25

The animation short,The Pear, is adapted from a story of the same title from Strange Stories From A Chinese Studio by Pu Songlin. An aphorism by Lao-tzu, “Excessive hoarding always leads to heavy loss”, is what truly lies behind the story. A taoist priest felt thirsty and begged a countryman for one of the pears he was selling. The latter refused. Then the priest cast a spell, poured a pip into the soil, and finally turned it into a pear tree. All its fruits were given away to the crowd, when the priest asked for nothing and left the countryman astonished by the fact that all that had been given away were his own pears and the tree was made from the handles of his barrow.

  • Director : Katalin Egely

I graduated in 2013 from the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design in Budapest, Hungary. My studies focused on animation, but lately my interests include documentary filmmaking. I find the spontaneity and teamwork involved with creating documentaries exciting. Also I enjoy changing the "speaking" role to the "listening" role. Animated documentary films are especially interesting because with animation it is possible to express the more subjective parts of a narrative. My focus is primarily on making music videos, credits and animated scenes for movies. I work with local clients as well as clients abroad.

I eat bread or rice this morning, how many days I have not taken a bath, the Five Mini becomes new, the comfort of the spring breeze and the everyday feelings, shocking happiness and misfortune...these are the important factors of the life so life is a painting as it is. Sometimes I observe myself haunted. I want to draw as if I breathed in. I would like to specialize in visuals and clean the meanings and messages that are naughty.
