2017: the Year of Masaaki Yuasa! A two-part special feature program that reveals the charm of Yuasa and his studio Science SARU.
In 2017, Masaaki Yuasa released the first feature films (not only one but two!) in this 13 years after Mind Game in 2004. These two movies (The Night is Short, Walk on Girl and Lu Over the Wall) have been highly acclaimed not only in Japan but also internationally. His creativity is supported by his studio Science SARU. Its unique style utilizing flash is also supported by international staffs and gives the studio a unique standpoint. Considering they will release the new series “DEVILMAN crybaby” for Netflix in 2018, Masaaki Yuasa and Science SARU’s momentum is getting faster and faster. With the attendance of the director himself and the staffs from the studio, the festival features “Now” of this one of the most unique studios in Japan in two-part programs!
Kai is a boy who lives in a lonely fishing village. One day, he meets and befriends Lu, a mermaid who likes singing and dancing. But the townspeople have always thought that mermaids bring disaster. Something happens that puts a huge rift between Lu and the villagers, endangering the town.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary from the beginning of the professional career of Go Nagai, his masterpiece Devilman revives as an animation series “DEVILMAN crybaby”. Even though it has been visualized many times, there were no works that could express until the end of the original work. DEVILMAN crybaby finally reaches to that ending. The complete world of DEVILMAN is now appearing.
The director is Masaaki Yuasa, who has been acclaimed all over the world by his high-quality works such as Ping Pong: The ANIMATION and Mind Game. The script is written by Ichiro Okochi. The music is composed by Kensuke Ushio. Japan’s leading creators work together to make the animation of world-class original comics.
Released in the beginning of 2018 exclusively on Netflix.
